This tradition was based on the biblical passage of Luke 2:22-39 that says that when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple, a particularly devout man named Simeon embraced the child and prayed the Canticle of Simeon: “Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” The reference to the light inspired the celebration of the blessing of the candles. It is known as Candlemas in English, because from around the 11th Century in Europe there was a tradition of bringing candles to the church to be blessed as part of the celebration. Unfortunately, this year my own family will not gather in person due to COVID-19 concerns and divided politics.In Mexico, this holiday is celebrated as Día de la Candelaria. 2 with bad memories, but instead let’s continue to have hope in our hearts. In years to come, let’s not replace the joy of Jan. After all this is a great excuse to get together with family and friends again after the holidays with love and laughter. We need to believe in our democratic government and our country needs closure for this damaging event. Our country needs to know the truth and those responsible need to be disciplined.

But the real instigators and promoters of this event are still running free and continuing to spread the same rumors and lies. A congressional investigation is trying to get to the truth out about what happened. It’s been over a year and we still do not have closure for Jan. They will have to confront many obstacles ahead of them, and I will be checking to see how they address the issues in the coming days, months and years. Biden and Harris brought us a fresh start, dignity and respect for our country. I was glad that my grandchildren were watching. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than 885,000 Americans and caused consequential economic devastation. It would be difficult for any administration to deal with all the issues going on in our country. Ongoing investigations continue, but this riot brought me great sadness. More than 90 of those charged have been sentenced and nearly 40 received prison time. Nearly 13 months later, 755 people have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the riot, 190 involving violence. It was basically an attempted coup against our United States democracy.
This mob was trying to interfere with our democracy by delaying or canceling the procedure that was to confirm the election of Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president. The crowd not only paraded towards the Capitol but forced its way into the building to overtake the electoral process and threaten senators, representatives and then-Vice President Mike Pence.
They told the crowd that the election was a fraud and stolen even after over 60 lawsuits by the administration to try to overturn the election results in court had been thrown out.
